I voted today. Despite the fact that Bush will carry Texas, I cast my ballot for Senator Kerry. I'm simply amazed that people will vote for our incumbent after he lied to the American people to go to war, backs hate-filled amendments, and makes lousy domestic and foreign policy decisions. I want Kerry to have a strong showing in Texas just to embarass Bush. Bush gloated in the fact that he carried Arkansas and Tennessee in the 2000 election, and his arrogance needs to be rubbed back in his face. He has abandoned traditional Republican values. In fact, Bob Barr endorses Libertarian Michael Badnarik. Yet, another Republican abandoning Bush.
And for all the lobbing of the label "flip flop" at John Kerry, George Bush seems to have flip flopped on the gay marriage issue. Suddenly, just a scant week before the election, he supports civil unions. WTF?!?!?!? Sorry honey, but it's too little too late. Your sudden but short-lived dance to the middle will do you no good. The gay community has heard you deride us for years. Your about-face will get you no votes.
I love this quote from the Des Moines Register in its endorsement of Kerry:
Yes, Kerry is liberal. But what's to fear from a liberal president? That he would run big deficits? That he would increase federal spending? That he would expand the power of the federal government over individuals' lives? Nothing Kerry could do could top what President Bush has already done in those realms.
How fun is that! And was anyone else expecting an October surprise? I figure we would have seen Osama bin Laden wheeled out, Hannibal Lecter style, in full-view of the media. So what is the rabbit Rove will pull out of his hat? I dunno, but stay tuned.
The American Conservative magazine did not endorse George W. Bush. Instead, they opted to write a series of articles, each one describing how a different candidate would make a better president than Bush. Read Kerry's article.
Ouch! That's gonna leave a mark.
How much longer before true conservatives realize that Bush is not a conservative. Squandering a surplus by running up the highest budget deficit ever is not conservative. Nation building is not conservative. Destroying relationships with other countries is not conservative. The Patriot Act is not conservative (or patriotic for that matter).
When a conservative magazine does not support a sitting Republican president, that should be a HUGE wake up call to a) conservatives, b) undecideds and c) EVERYONE ON THE PLANET! How can he be re-elected?
If you care to read the federal government's United States Commission on Civil Rights' 181-page report lambasting Bush's record on civil rights, click here. Otherwise, here are a few highlights:
This report finds that President Bush has not defined a clear agenda nor made civil rights a priority.
Voting Rights: Despite promising to unite the nation and improve its election system, the President failed to act swiftly toward election reform.
Equal Educational Opportunity: Early in his administration, the President widely promoted an education reform proposal, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), and garnered bipartisan support. Despite its worthy goals, however, NCLB has flaws that will inhibit equal educational opportunity and limit its ability to close the achievement gap.
Fair Housing: Policies instituted under the Bush administration have diminished housing opportunities for poor, disproportionately minority families.
Environmental Justice: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under this administration, despite some attempts, has not always been successful in advancing the cause of environmental justice.
Women: President Bush’s record on women’s issues is mixed. Economic gains for which he has paved the way are overshadowed by other actions that have set back women’s rights. For
Gay Men and Lesbians: President Bush appointed some gay rights supporters to Cabinet and administration positions. However, other actions he and his administration have taken have almost completely eclipsed the efforts he made.
Funding for Religious Groups: When President Bush took office, he expanded the ability of religious groups to receive federal funds through the Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. Although the initiative constitutes a retreat from civil rights, President Bush has consistently presented it as an extension of civil rights to religious groups.
How can this man possibly be re-elected? Hell, even Bush's cousins are voting for John Kerry.
12 more days until the regime change!

Happy National Coming Out Day! And congratulations to a certain someone for coming out to his parents this weekend.
Here's my old story, if you care to peruse it. I'll write more later.
