Sadly, the US lost one of the truly great gentlemen in politics yesterday. In memory of Lloyd Bentsen, Texas' last Democratic Senator before being appointed President Clinton's Treasury Secretary, I offer this clip of Bentsen in the 1988 VP debates delivering the most memorable line ever said in a VP debate.
What I love is Bentsen's reaction as Quayle says that he has as much experience as JFK. Bentsen raises his eyebrows, shakes his head and thinks "He just compared himself to JFK?!! Not even close!" Bentsen was too much of a gentleman to think the thoughts that would have gone through my mind: "What the hell is he thinking?!! Quayle couldn't even carry Kennedy's jockstrap!"
Afterwards, Dan Quayle appeared stunned and was exposed for the lightweight he is. I love it! I'm going to make some t-shirts with those lines on them. Pure brilliance from one of the great political statesmen of our time.
Thank you for everything Mr. Bentsen.

I believe this is a first in my life.
I read an entire book in one day. Yes, many other people do that on a regular basis. However, I'm not other people. I can't sit down and read a book cover to cover in one sitting. Typically, that bores me to tears. But reading a book in one day...that's what I did yesterday. Granted, it was done out of necessity. I've lagged behing on the reading schedule in my class, and my final exam is Friday, but I've been in similar situations before and not done the follow through of reading an entire book. Election 2004 chronicles the inside stories of the Bush and Kerry camps from late 2003 up through Election Day. I could not put it down. In fact, I read it through lunch. If you're interested in learning the behind-the-scenes workings of a presidential campaign, this book can't be recommended enough.
Anyways, just thought I'd share my happiness with you.
